The Power of Your Words

"The tongue has the power of life and death." - Proverbs 18:21a

Have you ever noticed that listening to some people raises your spirit, while listening to others incites within you very negative emotions such as anger. The nature of influence a leader will have on followers and observers is significantly affected by the language used. Words, and the context in which they are used, have the ability to motivate team members to perform beyond their expected ability or to paralyze their efforts.

When someone makes a great suggestion, do you say "great idea" or do you say "not bad"? Which do you suppose has a more profound positive impact?

When giving feedback to your team members, do they walk away feeling like they were in a boxing match and lost badly, or do they feel like they were at a rally and they are motivated to do things better?

Be aware of your language and speak life into people.
