Is there a place for culture in the global village?

The playing of the national anthem at the beginning of sporting events such as football, baseball and hockey is something that is steeped in tradition. What also seems to be steeped in tradition at these events is the distorting of national anthems. In some countries, words are added as punctuation, and in other countries, words are changed in favour of their teams.

Respect for national symbols seems to disappearing, and rapidly so! Yes the world is more and more a village. There is no disputing that! But within that village are different groups that we identify ourselves with. Within that group I identify with being a Jamaican. What does that mean for me? It means respecting your elders, taking a stand against inequality and injustice, having rhythm in my bones, a lover of sports, being very competitive, a challenger of the status quo, and relentlessly pursuing our dream.

When we lose sight of who we are as a people and what we stand for, we ultimately will fall for anything. Success is always in our grasp, but we must persist and not lose ourselves along the way.
